So, how did this whole damn thing get started anyway?

It is a question that we get, and I will tell you our story.  I have been fortunate to live in Boulder Colorado for most of my life.  It is my hometown.  I spent my entire career in Boulder County.  We have family, and life-long friends there.  Our kids and grandkids will call it their home too.  We are VERY vested in this community.

We built our home in the foothills above Boulder thirty seven years ago.
The home was located in the VERY best spot in Boulder County.

I was very fortunate to be able to retire in 2010.  When people would ask me what I was going to do, my stock answer was, "Anything I damn well please!"  Anyone who has checked my Facebook page have seen that I am doing my best to make good on that.

This included a half dozen trips in our small travel trailer named Rocinante.  We covered almost 20,000 miles, saw many sights, and visited many friends and family.  Each of those trips had a begining and an end.  Always to return home, to plan the next adventure.  Always a beginning and an end.

In the summer of 2015 I arrived home to see a "For Sale" sign planted on the corner of our property.  I wondered what My Bride was up to.  Upon her return home, and seeing the same sign, she wondered what I had in mind.

The sign was misplaced and was for a home for sale farther down the road.  However, the housing market being what it was, I asked her what she would take to walk out the door.  Her figure was lower than mine,.  But it got us talking.

For her retirement would be "GOING anywhere she damn well pleased."  She said that she wanted to get a trailer and just hit the road.  I asked her where Home Base would be.  She said...."Anywhere we park it."  I then asked her if we could get an Airstream trailer in which to travel.

We have been planning this thing ever since.  We are both young and in good health.  We won't be getting any younger.  It is time for the next big adventure.

So now, we head to Lakewood New Jersey to pick up our new home on March 2nd.

Moves and More Moves

It is not as if we have been doing nothing while waiting to begin our adventure.  February had us moving our son, Ryan, from Dearborn Michigan to Boulder.  We flew to Detroit on February 1st and helped him finish packing his small house into a 15ft U-Haul truck.

While in Dearborn we spent time with Ryan's boys, and dined at one of our favorite places.  La Pita is a Lebanese restaurant, very near to where Ryan has lived.  It has always been a great place to visit and eat, and holds many great memories. It always strikes us how Dearborn is such a diverse a community.

Steff jumped an airplane back to Colorado on the 5th.  At the same time, Ryan and I hit the road with the truck, a car hauler, and Ben.  Ben is Ryan's 3 year old, 120 lb, Neapolitan Mastiff.  We were fortunate that Ben agreed to ride in his kennel in the back of the truck, rather than in the cab with us.  Something he was becoming more and more reluctant to as time wore on.  Luckily, my strapping young son was on hand to lift his reluctant "puppy" up into the truck.

Vadin Welcomes Ben to Boulder
Ryan and I followed a fairly direct route back, making Des Moines Iowa the first night, Ogallala, Nebraska the next, and then Boulder.  We covered the 1,271 miles in about two and a half days of driving.

Steff, on the other hand, arrived in Boulder several hours after leaving Detroit, to find that our truck had been broken into while parked in the park-n-ride.  All we lost was "stuff" and need to replace a "windoor" on the topper.  Oh well....

Ryan has a town home in the same complex where Steff and I had our first apartment some 42 years ago.  It is also where Vadin's dad lives.  Vadin is quite excited to have his Uncle Ryan as a new neighbor.  Once back, it dawned on us that all of our Smith Clan has moved within the last six months.  The final stage of which is when Steff and I leave for New Jersey to pick up AIROSMITH on March 2.  We have already been planning where to go next.

Stay tuned.....
