Pu'uhonua o Honaunau - Place of Refuge
It is Friday, so why not go to a Place of Refuge?  The interesting thing about Hawaii is the mix of culture and history.  It comes home when you visit the Place of Refuge, which has been designated as a National Historical Park.

Hale o Keawe
The history here extends back over a thousand years as royal grounds where kings and queens lived.  And alternately, a place of refuge for those who violated a Kapu, usually resulting in a punishment of death.  Getting there were particularly difficult, as it was Kapu to enter royal grounds.

Most interesting is that the Hale of Keawe, or temple, is still used today by Hawaiians for worship and offerings.
              




Honaunau (Two Step) Beach







We started our tour of this area by snorkeling along the two step beach.  Once finished, we toured the complex.  

The Keone'ele Cove is considered sacred, and is the home of several Green Sea Turtles.  We were escorted around the grounds by small yellow birds, who seemed to consider themselves royalty.

Near the cove, there are several canoe houses, for royal use.

Jackson Square We spent just over a week and a half visiting the New Orleans and the surrounding area.  The main reason we came was to go to the first weekend of the Jazz Fest.  It was a return visit for us.  We came with good friends in 1990.  A bit has changed since then. PSA Anouncement**

Gentlemen, please do several things for yourself.  First, have a competent Primary Care Provider, visit them annually, and take their advice seriously.  Second, check your PSA at least annually and make sure your PCP sees your results. A year ago in June 2023 my PCP noticed that while my PSA was well within normal limits, it had gone up about a point.  She recommended that I discuss the test with my Urologist. I scheduled an appointment with him, and in fairly quick succession I endured a TRUS (Trans Rectal Ultrasound), where the results suggested an MRI of the Prostate.   That resulted in a PIRADS score that suggested a MRI assisted biopsy was next. My Urologist said that we could follow our summer travel plans, which included a trip through South East Alaska, on the Alaska State Ferry, and complete the biopsy in the fall. The biopsy revealed prostate cancer.  My Urologist said that I could do “Active Surveillance”, the first level of treatment.  This mea...

Pinnacles National Park

We don't typically travel just to see a National Park.  We aren't concisely "bagging" Parks, though if close we will always take the opportunity for a visit.  I will mark certain areas on Google Maps as places that we want to visit.  When planning a route, we look to see if we can include those "saved" places along the way.  Additionally, we learned that Pinnacles was a release location for the endangered California Condor .  A visit might include a sighting of this massive bird.  The Bear Gulch Cave hike, in Pinnacles National Park , was one of those places.  It is also a Park that came highly recommended from travel friends who have visited.  They recommended the hiking.  We planned our route to allow a visit.
